THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
What is Confirmation?
The Catechism states, “Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." (CCC 1285)
Growth is vital to human life; the body and mind must grow to stay alive. We believe that the soul also needs to grow to maturity in the life of grace, just as the human body must grow through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. We, Catholics believe the Sacrament of Confirmation is the supernatural equivalent of the growth process on the natural level. It builds on what was begun in Baptism and what was nourished in Holy Eucharist. It completes the process of initiation into the Christian community, and it matures the soul for the work ahead to be a Disciples of Christ. Confirmation is NOT a “rite of passage" or a graduation from the church but a starting point in an adventure of being a Disciple of Jesus Christ. Confirmation Preparation is a one year program (9th grade), which is a continuation of the ongoing formation since the student’s First Holy Communion. St. Lawrence usually prepares those High School freshmen for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our parish policy is that a young person must be participating in religious education or approved home school program or a Catholic school one full year prior to the year in which they receive this Sacrament. All students who participate in the 8th grade religious education “Theology of the Body” classes that are offered here at St. Lawrence fulfills this diocesan pre-requisite.
Students will meet on Sunday’s (see Schedule of Events) in the Parish Hall Lower Level from 2-4:45 p.m. (a snack is provided by parent volunteers).
Confirmation events can be linked to smartphones, tablets, or computers. To do so click on the calendar tab at the top and click on the event.
Parent Volunteers and volunteers are important part of our Confirmation program. They provide snacks and help with class discussion. If interested please contact the Religious Education Office.
Attendance is crucial since each class covers a lot of information and answers many question that teens ask. Class will be held as indicated on the Confirmation calendar.
We are blessed in this diocese to have many retreat opportunities for our youth to attend and grow in their faith and have a good time.

Universal Requirements for Confirmation
Sunday Mass attendance is a blessing and is expected and required for all Catholics. “To receive Confirmation one must be in a state of grace. One should receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (CCC 1310) Reconciliation services will be available throughout the year, as well as other reconciliation times, to enable the candidate to develop a habit of reconciliation but also to return to and strive to remain in that state of grace necessary for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
